Crested Butte

The Town of Crested Butte is the quintessential Colorado mountain town.  With most of the town being a designated Historic District, you will find quaint Victorian style homes with parks of all sizes scattered throughout.  Walking down Elk Avenue, you will find a variety of shops and restaurants that rival much larger towns in terms of quality and variety.  Downtown Crested Butte is the area where most of the character that magazine articles comment on when writing about the area.  The speed limit is 15 miles per hour throughout the town and there are no traffic lights once you leave Gunnison.

People who want a home within the town limits generally like the fact that you can easily walk or ride your bike to Elk Avenue stores & restaurants.  The lots are usually 50×125 with a few exceptions, so to purchase something in Crested Butte is to have your neighbors close to you and somewhat limited views as compared with homes in the outlying areas.  There are historic homes that have been updated, but not completely, historic homes that have been gutted down to the studs, lifted up so new foundations or basements can be added and new homes that have been built within the strict building standards allowed within the town limits.  There is still some vacant land in town and wonderful local architects who can help you design a home here that will pass through the approval process and provide you with the space you are looking for.

The free shuttle bus that runs between Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte makes four official stops as it goes through town so most places are within a few blocks of a stop.  There is also a bus that runs from Mt. Crested Butte to Gunnison and you can get on that at the 4-way stop.

You can get more information about the town code at the Town of Crested Butte’s website – www.crestedbutte-co.gov.
